Janice Mautner Markham, violin Jennifer Wu, viola Circe Diaz Gamero, cello Inspired by the juxtaposition of high energy syncopation and dark melancholy modes, three string players have joined forces to record and perform global music from every era. The JAC Trio, founded at Pico Union Project in 2015, honors beloved traditions as well as modern voices and celebrates the rich and varied cultural landscape of Los Angeles. The JAC is inspired by their diverse audiences, and strives to bring a unique palate of their own experiences to the music. A lead mission of The JAC Trio is to provide opportunities for women musicians, writers, composers and arrangers, and in that spirit, new works are being developed with JAC Trio founding member and violist, Amira Bennett, accordionist Gee Rabe and percussionist Emi Desirè. In the winter of 2022, the trio expanded to quartet with violinist Eli Chavez for the landmark concert “Amazed: Heschel’s Shabbat” at Valley Beth Shalom. This world premiere and groundbreaking program featured 14 new works by composers of the Max Helfman Institute, under the direction of Cantor Phil Baron, and masterfully conducted by Dr. Diane White-Clayton. One night only! 🎭 Lesbo Solo 🎭 Saturday, March 21 at 7 pm Slightly world-renowned lesbian playwright, Terry Baum, has both created and ridden the wave of history that has freed gay people. She tells that true story in Lesbo Solo, My True Life Adventures thru 50 Years of Gay Liberation, which won Best of Fringe at the 2024 S.F. Fringe Fest, and was a big hit at World Pride D.C. this year. The play begins in 1963, when Terry’s beloved high school teacher, Miss Perl (yes, our own beloved Harriet Perl!), is threatened with being fired over rumors that she’s a lesbian. Lesbo Solo ends 50 years later, with the astonishing redemption of Miss Perl in a world that has been transformed for lesbians and gays. In between those two events, Terry grows from a homophobic teenager to a pioneering lesbian playwright who demands to be honored by her reluctant parents — and marches in the Pride Parade in a contingent so politically incorrect that no one will march with her! Shaliach Tzibbur Raymond Zachary (they/them) is a classically trained countertenor currently located in Los Angeles. They attended the American Jewish University as a Jewish studies major and has served as a Cantorial Soloist for several years, having the opportunity to sing with some of the most prestigious names in cantorial music. Raymond has sung on more than 35 Bimot around the globe and has also done extensive concert work within the Jewish community. Raymond currently serves on the board of the Guild of Temple Musicians supervising a portfolio focused on Diversity and Inclusion, and serves as Shaliach Tzibbur at Congregation B’nai Tzedek. Outside of synagogue life, Raymond is an award-winning Musical theatre actor and has performed in numerous symphonic and theatrical productions, including an annual residency at Disneyland with the Klezmer band Mostly Kosher.
