A personal note —
On this day of Yom Ha’Zikaron, honoring those who have served and died for Israel, I’ve been thinking about my connection with the land, the history and how it has shaped me as a Jew and a Rabbi.
Tonight begins Yom Ha’Atzmaut, celebration of Israel’s independence and her 72nd birthday.
While I’ve been blessed to visit and live in Israel throughout my life, this year I’m reflecting on the privilege and responsibility of having taken 32 twelfth-graders to Israel a few years ago, many of them for the first time.
It was through their eyes, their challenging questions, their concerns and their dreams that I re-experienced Israel anew. I feel so grateful for who Israel is, and all that she can be, Gd willing soon, with our courageous support and participation.
Whatever your relationship is with Israel, I invite you visit anew, even virtually, during these times. In my experience it’s only by developing a personal relationship with any place or person, community or issue that I learn the contours of the issues and the areas for continued attention and growth.

Israel, I love you. It’s complicated and, I deeply love you.
