Shabbat at BCC
“Shabbat is a palace in time” -Abraham Joshua Heschel
Kabbalat Shabbat Services
Join us every Friday Night at 8pm as we welcome Shabbat at services led by BCC clergy and at times lay leaders. Check the calendar for special Shabbat events and guest speakers. As with all synagogues, Shabbat services are free.
At the end of Shabbat Services, join us for our Oneg Shabbat, a free reception with challah and wine, deserts, and new friends to meet. Oneg spreads are generously underwritten by donors like you: Would you like to sponsor the Oneg, flowers, or Kiddush, in honor or memorial to someone? Click here to download the form; please return it to the BCC office in person or by email.
Ruach Chayim: Extra-Musical Shabbat
On the last Friday of the month, at our usual 8pm service, we hold a special Shabbat experience: BCC’s “Ruach Chayim” service welcomes Shabbat with guitar, drum, song, and open heart. BCC is known for the spiritual and musical way in which we share and experience Judaism. We invite you to this new take on an age-old tradition! This service is a participatory and spiritually welcoming Shabbat in the best of BCC’s tradition. Bring friends, neighbors, co-workers, loved ones, and anyone in your life to learn the new melodies along with us.
The Ruach Chayim service is usually preceded by an outing to a local restaurant by members, Dinner in the Neighborhood, beginning at 6pm. For more information, email our Executive Director to connect with those having dinner beforehand.
Saturday Morning Services
Saturday morning Shabbat services, every 3rd Saturday of the month, 10 am – noon.
Join us for traditional-style Shabbat morning services infused with BCC’s informal, welcoming spirit and the warmth of community. Rousing melodies, Torah reading, and insightful discussion of the week’s Torah portion. Learners welcome. Once you try it, you won’t want to miss it. Kiddush and vegetarian potluck always follows the service.
About the picture: At a Saturday lay-led morning minyan in July, Davi Cheng captured the sun rays shining onto the Torah from BCC’s sun-roofed bimah, just as the Torah readers were preparing to chant. This photograph was a Top-five finalist in URJ’s 2011 photo contest.
Family and Community Shabbat Service
Sept. to June, beginning at 12/noon.
Our family education program includes a musical service open for the whole community. The service takes place most Saturdays excluding the third Saturday of the month and some holidays. Check calendar for dates.
Marking Our Days
Is there a special event in your life to honor or commemorate? Always wanted to light Shabbat candles at services? Contact us if you would like to participate in services (please let us know at least a week in advance). BCC is lay-affirming; we welcome the engagement of the community in creating sacred space.
